Reading the stars: the science of Aboriginal astronomy

Reading the stars: the science of Aboriginal astronomy

Learn about the science behind Aboriginal astronomy.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people developed a number of practical ways to observe the sun, moon and stars to inform navigation and calendars, predict weather, and inform law and social structure. Learn about the science that is encoded in these oral traditions and material culture with Dr Duane Hamacher – an astronomer and Senior Research Fellow at the Monash University Indigenous Studies Centre – who specialises in indigenous astronomical and geological knowledge in Australia and the Pacific.
