Featuring novelist and podcaster Nicole Hayes (moderator), author and academic Adjunct Professor Sophie Cunningham, television presenter Leila Gurruwiwi and writer and journalist Alice Pung.

Join us as four contributors from the publication From The Outer: Footy Like You’ve Never Heard It (2016, Black Inc.) come together to talk participation, inclusion, fandom and more.

Sophie Cunningham is the author of four books including Melbourne (2011) and Warning: The Story of Cyclone Tracy (2014) She is a former editor of Meanjin and former Chair of the Literature Board of the Australia Council. She is a founding and current board member of The Stella Prize, a prize for Australian women's writing that champions diversity and cultural change. She was recently appointed as adjunct professor at RMIT in the School of Media and Communication collaborating with the non/fictionLab research group. She is mad for the Cats

Nicole Hayes’ debt release, The Whole of My World (2013), is a young adult novel and the first ‘footy novel’ to feature a teenage girl. It was longlisted for the 2014 Gold Inky and shortlisted for the 2014 YABBAs. Her second novel, One True Thing (2015) was awarded the 2015 Children’s Peace Literature Award. In 2016, Nicole co-edited an anthology of writing, From the Outer: Footy Like You’ve Never Heard It (Black Inc), with Alicia Sometimes, both of whom form part of the groundbreaking all-female Australian football podcast, The Outer Sanctum. Nicole and Alicia have also collaborated on a football book for younger readers about the inaugural women’s AFL competition, A Footy Girl’s Guide to the Stars of 2017 (Black Inc, February 2017).

Leila Gurruwiwi is a TV presenter on the Marngrook Footy Show on SBS/NITV and Deadly Sista Girlz mentor for the Wirrpanda Foundation. Leila has appeared on radio, emceed at many events and had acting roles in Team of Life, The Secret River and Glitch. Leila is passionate about her own Yolngu culture other Indigenous Australian Cultures as well as other wonderful cultures that share Australia. Leila loves heading over the West Gate Bridge to watch the western Bulldogs do their thing!

Alice Pung’s books include Unpolished Gem an Australian bestseller which won the Australian Book Industry Newcomer of the Year Award, Her Fathers Daughter which won the Western Australia Premier’s Award for Non-Fiction and Laurinda which was shortlisted for numerous awards in 2015. Alice also edited the collection Growing Up Asian in Australia and her writing has appeared in the Monthly, the Age, and The Best Australian Stories and The Best Australian Essays. Her series of children's books, 'Meet Marly' from the Our Australian Girl series were published in 2015. Alice is a qualified lawyer and works as a legal researcher in the area of minimum wages and pay equity. Alice supports the Western Bulldogs.
