Coburg City Oval - Landscaping works (Stages 2 and 3)
Council endorsed the Coburg City Oval Precinct Landscape Master Plan following the successful conclusion of community consultation in December 2014, to improve community access to this open space in Coburg.
The initial phase of Coburg City Oval - Landscaping works (Stage 1), has opened up Coburg City Oval for greater community access. Completed in November 2015, it created a newly landscaped western edge with generous access provided to the Oval through the installation of operable fencing and gates. This improves circulation and connectivity while preserving the capacity of the Oval for holding ticketed events.
Future stages of the City Oval redevelopment have been progressing since then, with redesign of existing public areas that will see improvements all around the oval to provide greater access, increase amenity and recreation opportunities within the precinct.
Major stages of this project
This stage completed in November 2015, with substantial improvements to the north western edge of City Oval including better public access to open space for recreation, as well as improved circulation and connectivity.
Redesign stages 2 and 3
Tenders were called for Stage 2 civil and landscape works towards the end of 2017, covering works in the north-eastern portion of the City Oval public access areas including a new entry landscape in the area adjoining Bridges Reserve North.
There was a disappointing response to the tender. The result was no acceptable offer being received and the decision was made to undertake a review of design specifications as part of a redesign.
That decision sees the planned Stages 2 and 3 combined into a single contract to be tendered in the next financial year. With a construction contract planned to commence in the second half of 2018, the overall project will be in line with the budget programme by achieving the completion of both Stages of work before 30 June 2019.
Prior to tenders being called for Stages 2 and 3, early works were carried out during May and June 2018. Demolition works including removal of former toilet blocks located at the northern end of the laneway along the eastern edge of City Oval have been completed. In addition, the removal of old Cyclone fencing along the top of the bluestone retaining wall above the laneway has enabled installation of new black steel mesh fencing on the eastern edge of City Oval.
The final stage of City Oval Landscaping is programmed for the financial year commencing 1 July 2019. This will see improvements to public access areas adjoining the pavilion and grandstand in the south western portion of City Oval.
