Gender norms and respectful relationships

When: Tuesday 7 June 2016, 6.30 - 9 pm
Presenter: Women's Health in the North
Cost: Free session

Children are exposed to many factors which influence their attitudes and behaviours regarding gender roles. By the age of four, they have already formed an understanding of what it means to be a male or a female.

Dr Kylie Smith from Melbourne University and Annie Douglass from Women’s Health in the North, are presenting this session to enable us to examine and understand this topic.

Dr Kylie Smith is a Senior Lecturer at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education - The University of Melbourne and has worked in early childhood services for over twenty five years. She is interested in young children’s performances of identity and is currently exploring how respectful relationships programs might look in the early childhood space.

In this presentation Kylie examines the stereotypical ideas about gender and the various ways gender norms play a role in children’s development. She will also provide us with some practical strategies to challenge those often narrow ideas of what it means to be a boy or a girl.

Annie Douglass works in the Health Promotion Team at Women’s Health in the North (WHIN).   WHIN is the regional women’s health service for the northern metropolitan area of Melbourne.  WHIN works across a number of different focus areas to improve the health, safety and
well-being of women and their communities.

Annie will be speaking about the gender norms and respectful relationships work that WHIN has been undertaking with early childhood educators from across Moreland
