Interview with Cr Kavanagh
Why did you run for Council?
I want to make a difference by contributing to my local community.
I also wanted Council to get ‘back to basics’ and not be distracted by tackling issues beyond our control.
What do you see as the top five issues facing Council over the next four years?
- Capital renewal of our infrastructure
- Over reliance on our rate base i.e. ratepayers
- Improving our retail business centres
- Improving our footpaths
- Better public open spaces
Name three things you want this Council to achieve in the next four years?
- Enhance the appearance of the city
- Complete the Gowanbrae Community Centre
- Ensure that we are more accountable to the residents we serve.
What is your vision for Moreland?
A vibrant, peaceful, welcoming city that people view as being a great place to live and raise a family.
What are your hobbies and interests?
Family activities, current affairs, reading biographies, horse racing and the Carlton Football Club.
What community activities in Moreland have you been involved in?
Principally through education as I’m a local primary school teacher.
I’ve also been involved with parent fundraising groups and local sporting clubs.
What are some of your favourite things about Moreland?
The complete diversity that can be found in our city.
Not only our cultural diversity but the diversity of housing styles, of streetscapes, of shopping strips, of sporting facilities as well as of age and religious affiliation.
Work experience, career, job?
I have been a primary school teacher for 27 years and previously I also worked part-time in petrol stations for many years.
Family, children, dogs, cats?
I’m married with four children.
I have a golden retriever called Mozart and cockatiel named Snowy.
What’s the best time of day and method for residents and community groups to contact you?
Email is best for me as I’m teaching during the day. If you do phone, I will always return calls as promptly as I can.
Sum up Moreland in five words
Diverse, vibrant, safe, peaceful, welcoming.
Who are your roles models/ people you admire?
On a personal level my mother and father - it was a privilege to be born to the parents I was born too.
Politically, John Curtin is a hero. I also greatly value people who have shown a deep commitment to those who are marginalised in our society and Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, is a great example of this.
